Alice Maecile Smith Ramsey, age 90 of Granite Falls, left this world to look her Savior in the face on May 9, 2025, at Valdese AMOREM Hospice after a lengthy decline with vascular dementia. Born on July 20, 1934, to Oliver and Mae Wilson Smith in Lenoir, NC, Maecile lived a life of commitment, service, generosity, and love in Caldwell County’s Dry Ponds community.
Lovingly known by family and friends as “Mawcile,” Maecile graduated from Hudson High School in 1952 and thereafter devoted her life to her husband, Bill Ramsey, her family, her church, and helping others. At different points in her life, she was secretary to the family business - Bill’s Plumbing in Sawmills, NC, a Sunday School teacher, a choir member, a Hospice volunteer, a loyal church member, leader of singing at Shaire Center, and the person everyone she knew looked forward to seeing when her smiling face appeared.
Maecile enjoyed many simple things – various types of craft-making, gardening, singing, visiting with family and friends, her family, and helping others. Her love for her Lord and her family led her to share her joy for living and earthly blessings with all she could; only her heart was bigger than the beautiful smile that lived on her love-filled face.
Maecile will be remembered for her smile, her love, and her joyous spirit that she spread everywhere she went. Of course, she will also be remembered for her famous pickles, quick wit, generosity, canning skills, love for Bill and family, her flowers, and her love for Psalm 23. Known as the Green Bean Queen in close circles, Maecile, it is said, canned a “gazillion” green beans which she used to share her love of God and His Kingdom.
Maecile said many memorable things, often Biblical in nature, and also declared to all within earshot that “four girls made her ‘grand’ and two boys made her ‘great,’ referring to her four granddaughters – Mindy, Connie, Chelsey, and Taylor – and two great grandsons – Asher and Baylor. Yes, she adored her family and dear friends. What a treasure she was to all who knew her.
Maecile was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Ramsey; her son, Randy Dean Ramsey; her parents, Oliver Newton and Mae Wilson Smith; her brother, Wilson Smith; and two sisters, Theresa Annas and Jewell Powell.
She leaves behind to join her again in the New Jerusalem two sons, Tony (Kathy) Ramsey of Granite Falls, and Mike (Patty) Ramsey of Hudson; four granddaughters – Mindy (Joe) Brown, Connie (Travis) Sprouse, Chelsey (Chris) Cloninger, and Taylor (Josh) Grant; two great grandsons – Asher and Baylor Cloninger; and a sister, Pauline Day of Kannapolis. They all have great stories to share about what a difference Mawcile made in their lives.
A memorial service will be held at Dry Ponds Baptist Church, 5235 Union Church Road in Granite Falls on May 15, 2025, at 4 pm. Family will remain in the church sanctuary after the service if you would like to speak to them. Memorials may be made to Dementia Alliance of North Carolina.
Evans Funeral Service is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Alice Maecile Smith Ramsey.
