Billy Gene Watson

July 16, 1933 — December 13, 2025

Billy Gene Watson, a dedicated husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, was called home and serenaded by angels on December 13, 2025, at the age of 92, while residing at Brookdale Senior Living.

Bill has now been united with the love of his life, the late Shirley Ann Triplett Watson, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2015. Bill was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Whitnel, where he served in many capacities throughout the years, while giving generously of his time to his church of 70 years. Bill’s true joy was singing—a passion he shared with many as a beloved choir member at the church. Even in the last year of his life, he continued to lift spirits with his voice, sharing the gift of song with the residents and staff at Brookdale.

He dedicated his professional life to craftsmanship in the furniture industry as a product engineer, retiring after years of dedicated service at Crestline Furniture and later Broyhill Furniture.

In his younger days, Bill had a passion for life simple joys and exciting pursuits. He especially enjoyed fast cars, motorcycles, fishing, and coin collecting. His cars were always spotless, rarely driven in the rain. Above all, he was a man of deep faith who always put God first in everything he did.

He is survived by a loving family who will continue to honor his memory: Daughters: Sandra Hicks, his devoted caregiver, and her husband Forrest, of Lenoir, NC. Tina Bryant and her partner, Joseph Patrick Dowling III, of Sunset Beach, NC. Grandson and Great-Granddaughter: Tyler Weston Craig and his beautiful great- granddaughter, Palmer Ann Craig, of Wilmington, NC. Brother: Doy Odell Watson and his wife, Laura, of Morganton, NC, Extended Family: Numerous nieces and nephews. Assisting with compassionate and loving caregiving were his sister-in-law, Lois Triplett of Lenoir, and nieces: Nancy Greer and Sheila (Tootie) Auton of Lenoir.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rome Leonard Watson and Mettie Edna Church Watson Clark, his brothers Jerry Watson and Floyd Watson, and his sister Anna Ruth Coffey.

The family extends their tremendous and heartfelt thanks to the truly exceptional staff at Brookdale Senior Living. They are recognized for providing far more than nursing care, offering a peaceful and compassionate environment during Bill’s final transition.

Graveside rites will be held on December 17, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Whitnel cemetery, with Pastor Stuart White officiating.

Pallbearers: Matt Bolick, Kevin Carswell, Jody McLean, Joey Watson
