Cecil Franklin Smith of Granite Falls went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 31, 2010 following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Caldwell County to Clyde Willard Smith, Sr. and Bertha Mae Helton Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Mountain Grove Church of Granite Falls. Cecil had worked for several years with the Alcatel Company where he became a trainer for employees. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, and attending the horseshoe tournaments at the Smith family reunions. He was an avid Carolina fan. He loved history, the Bible, and sharing his knowledge with others.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren and he will be remembered for his love of helping those in need. Other than his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by an infant sister, Patricia Smith and a brother, Harold (Smitty) Smith. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Shirley Jean Smith of the home, children; Kurt Woodring and wife Annette of Dudley Shoals, Rachel Saunders and husband John of Hudson, Mark Woodring of Lenoir and Jacqueline White of Granite Falls; brothers Clyde Smith, Jr. and wife Alice of Millers Creek, Carl “Bud†Smith and wife Loretta of Hudson, Tim Smith and wife Lucy of Granite Falls, and sisters; Elaine Eller and husband Jim of Hudson and Barbara Watson and husband Jerry of Hudson. Mr. Smith is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A celebration of Cecil’s life will be held on Monday, January 3, 2010 at the Mountain Grove Baptist Church at 2:30 PM. Officiating the service will be Pastor Gary Watson and Preacher Clyde Smith, Jr. Interment will follow the service at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. Serving as pallbearers will be Abrahm Saunders, Matthew Saunders, Kurt Woodring, Danny Woodring, Jim Eller and Elverson “Coot†Annas.
