Lenoir– Mr. R. Don Pilkenton age 95, passed away on February 18, 2016 at the Shaire Center. Mr. Pilkenton loved his Lord and Savior and was a Christian man and was a long time member of College Avenue Baptist Church where he was a member for over 70 years and was also head usher for 34 years and served as a Sunday School Teacher for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Julia Pilkenton. He was also preceded in death by his wife Pat Story Pilkenton of 63 years of marriage. He was the last of sixteen siblings. He is survived by his son Doug Pilkenton and wife Teresa. He has two grandchildren Darian Pilkenton and Annette Miller and husband Jeff. He has four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He also has two sister-in-laws Maggie Miller, and Joann Thomas and husband Garland. He is also survived by special nieces and nephews too numerous to name. Mr. Pilkenton served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Basilan. He listened to gospel music and preaching every day. He also loved the wonderful staff at Bojangles where he ate breakfast every morning. The family wishes to give gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Shaire Center for their loving care. The family also wishes to thank all of those that came to visit Don while he was in the Shaire Center. A funeral service honoring Mr. Pilkenton’s life will be held on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Evans Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Charles Brawley officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to College Avenue Baptist Church, 1201 College Avenue SW, Lenoir, NC 28645.
