Edgar Lee Phelps

March 9, 1928 — January 19, 2012

Lenoir, NC- Mr. Edgar “Ed” Lee Phelps, age 83, of Lenoir, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born March 9, 1928 in Caldwell County, Mr. Phelps was a son of the late Edgar Hill and Lula Price Phelps and the husband of the late Velma Greene Phelps. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Annabelle Phelps Moffitt, Pearl Phelps Gilbert, 3 brothers, Ward Phelps, Arthur Phelps, Charlie Phelps and a great-grandson, Nathan Plunk. Mr. Phelps had a love for God and was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was a musician, playing the guitar, mandolin and singing. Many will remember him for his highly requested song “Old Job”.   He was well known to most for his furniture repair work which he did for over 60 years and his co-workers and friends remember all of his wonderful jokes. He is survived by two sons, Tommy Phelps and wife Martha of Boone; Keith Phelps and wife Bea of Lenoir; 5 daughters, Lois Phelps; Darlene Phelps Hall and husband Ray; Sarah Phelps Bryant and husband George; Dawn Phelps all of Lenoir; Margorie Elkins of Burnsville; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Phelps’ life will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 22, 2012 in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Reverend Russell Cook and Reverend Ronnie Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Nazareth Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2 until 3 PM, one hour prior to the service at Evans Funeral Service.
