Tacoma, WA – Edna Joan Williams McDaniel, age 79, of Tacoma, Washington, formally of Lenoir, NC was called from earthly life to her eternal home on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at Saint Joseph Hospital. She was a devoted mother who lived a good life, and exhibited a great example for her friends and family of how Christ wanted us to live. She was born in Caldwell County on April 29, 1933 to the late Mildred and Harry Williams, Sr. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her sister Mildred Irene Williams Battle; two brothers Edward Taylor Williams and Emmanuel Rhyne Williams; two nieces Beverly Jean Dixon Davenport, and Yetta Neal Dixon; and one great niece Ebony Renee Greene. Joan graduated from Freedman High School in 1950. She graduated from Bennett College with a BA degree in Music and English. She was employed by the following institutions: Ann Chestnut High School in Fayetteville, NC; Caldwell County School as a Librarian; Carver High School in Winston-Salem, NC as an English and Music teacher; Adult Education teacher in Tacoma, WA; Tacoma Washington School System as an English teacher and Choral Director; and Franklin Pierce School District in WA, from which she retired in 1985. Joan also shared her gifts at Smith Memorial UMC as the Director of Music Education and spent many years assisting with Vacation Bible School during the summer. She always shared her Christian character with all whom she encountered. Joan was passionate in her love for education. She was an inspiration for all the students in her care. She is survived by a daughter, Tracy McDaniel of Seattle, WA and a son, Todd McDaniel of Kent, WA; three sisters, Sylvia A. Williams Greene of Lenoir, NC, Donna E. Williams of Hudson, NC; Betty Jean Harbison of CA; two brothers, Charles N. Williams (Kathi) of Tacoma, WA and Harry G. Williams, Jr. of Maryland; She is also survived by 4 nieces, 2 nephews, a cousin and special friend Barbara Jean McCoy Townes of New Jersey. There are numerous great nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The memorial service will be held at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, 421 Woodsway Lane, Lenoir, on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 2:00. Interment will be at Belleview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service, and at the home of Tammy Greene, 410 Finley Avenue, Lenoir, beginning on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
