Effie Verlee Coffey, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 17, 2026 at UNC Health Blue Ridge – Morganton. She was born in Watauga County on October 1, 1932 to the late Charlie and Julia Knight Coffey.
Effie was the oldest surviving member of Worship Point Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in Vacation Bible School. She was the epitome of what a Deacon’s wife should be.
She retired from WalMart in Lenoir, having worked there from the time they opened in1988, retiring at age 75. She loved to travel with her late husband, Edgar. Earlier in their marriage they enjoyed camping and always had a great garden.
She was the last survivor of nine children and was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edgar Coffey,
Effie is survived by her daughters, Juanita Curtis and husband, Barry; Rosa Watkins; Barbara Sparks and husband, Garry; grandchildren, Bradley Curtis (Lauren); Brent Curtis (Carrie); Kelly Wellborn (Kurt); Lisa Garrett; Traci Williams (Jason); Beverly Greene (McKenzie); Matthew Coffey (Anna); Robert Sparks (Anna); Chad Sparks; Stephanie Lail (Derrick); Anthony Marino-Sparks (Eric); Justin Sparks (Hannah); 25 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members, too many to count.
A graveside service will be held at Worship Point Baptist Church Cemetery on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church at 11:30.
