Gwendolyn Moore Thompson Carlton, 83, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born in Caldwell County on November 3, 1933 to the late J.C. Thompson and Mary Ethel Moore Thompson. Mrs. Carlton was a long-time, active member of Lower Creek Baptist Church. She graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College and spent the next 30 years teaching at Happy Valley High School and later Hibriten High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Keith Carlton, and their infant son, William Raymond Carlton. She is survived by her children, John Bryan Carlton of Charleston, WV; Nan Carlton Mosteller and husband, John of Richmond, VA; Catherine Carlton Metcalf and husband, Michael of Grovetown, GA; grandchildren, Anna Catherine Mosteller of Richmond, VA; Jonathan Derrick Cook and wife, Emily of Collettsville; Jordan Andrew Cook and wife, Amanda of Baton; Sarah Elizabeth Newhouse and husband, Jarred of Davenport, IA; John Bryan Carlton, II of Charleston, WV; and great-granddaughter, Madelyn Kate Cook. A celebration of Mrs. Carlton’s life will be held at Lower Creek Baptist Church on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Larry Gilbreath officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 12:00 prior to the service.
