Helen Lucille Setzer Medford Reid, 86, of Hudson, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, alongside her beloved sister and lifelong companion, Mary Bumgarner.
Helen was born in Lenoir, North Carolina, on March 24, 1939, to Clifford Ward Setzer and Carrie Leola Craig Setzer. She graduated with the Class of 1957 from Hudson High School. On October 3, 1959, she married Samuel Alfred Medford at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, later marrying Sam Arnold Reid. Helen retired from a long career in the textile and furniture industries.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husbands, Sam Alfred Medford and Sam Arnold Reid; her stepson, Samuel Edward Reid Sr.; and her brothers, Vernon Leo Setzer, Doyle Alphonso Setzer, Charles Edward Setzer, and Kenneth Ward Setzer.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, David Medford (Debby) of Spartanburg, SC, and Tracy Medford (Tina) of Concordia, MO; her stepdaughter-in-law, Bertha Reid; her grandchildren, Jonathan Medford (Sally) of Whiteville, NC, Courtney Swoboda (Sean) of Elizabethtown, NC, Malynda Medford of Austin, TX, Samantha Borgstadt (Jacob) of Concordia, MO, and Alicia Kueck (Ethan) of Concordia, MO; her step-grandson, Samuel Edward Reid Jr. (Karen); and nine beloved great-grandchildren.
Helen loved her family deeply and lived her life with a spirit of adventure. She was always ready for a trip, never afraid to try something new, and had an extraordinary gift for cooking for large gatherings, both at church and at home.
She was passionate about canning, homemaking, and spending time with her loved ones — but most of all, she treasured the bond she shared with her partner in crime, her sister, Mary.
