Mr. Herbert Laurance Swanson, age 89, of Lenoir, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice in Lenoir. He was born to John and Augusta Seaburg Swanson on November 27, 1923 in South Easton, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters, also his first wife, Doreen Swanson. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Morris Swanson, two step daughters, Garnieth Leois Bollinger of North Carolina and Karen Delaine Tobin of Florida. Four Step grandchildren,April Dawn Taylor, Jonathon Wayne Taylor and Jacob William Bollinger, all of North Carolina, and Jason Andrew Steward of Florida; Two sons, Mark Swanson of Clermont, Florida and Kent Swanson of Orlando, Florida; one daughter, Gale Biela of Orlando, Florida; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one brother, Wally Swanson of Lockport, Illinois; and a host of nieces and nephews. Herbert was a machinist in Lockport, Illinois before he moved to Florida, where he became an E.M.T. for South Lake Hospital of Clermont, Florida. He served in the US Army from November 1943 to November 1945 in Germany as a Gun Crewman Light Artillery, winning a Victory Metal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, and American Theater Campaign Ribbon. A celebration of Herbert’s life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the First Wesleyan Church with Pastor James Baker officiating. Burial will be at the Black Mountain VA Cemetery with full Military honors.
