Hubertien Helen Scott

Dr. Hubertien Helen Scott, 98, passed away September 6, 2026, at home with family.

She was born on December 9, 1927, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward W. Rapp and Hubertien H. (Gerard) Rapp, sisters, Katherine Flanagan, Marjorie Taylor, and brothers, William, Richard, and Edward Rapp. She is survived by her brother, Donald Rapp.

She leaves four children and their spouses: Richard and Gail Williams, John and Maxine Williams, Hubertien (Tina) and William (Bill) Greene, Elizabeth (Beth) Williams and husband Garfield (Gary) Ramdeen, two grandsons, three granddaughters, two great grandsons, two great granddaughters, and thirty-two nieces and nephews.

She was a registered nurse, later in life, she returned to college and earned a Ph. D in English Literature. She taught college and graduate level courses at the University of Chattanooga (now UTC) as an Assistant Professor in 1965. In 1970, she moved to Appalachian State University as an Associate Professor, promoted to Professor in 1975. She was deeply involved with the English Honors and General Honors Programs. She retired in 1992 as Professor Emerita.

She loved being in and around water. She was a competitive swimmer, national champion in 1955, swimming coach, synchronized swimmer and coach, Water Safety Instructor, water skier, SCUBA diver, and sailor.

She loved the outdoors: hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing. She took three different Outward Bound courses, two in Colorado, one sailing in the Florida Keys.

Travel was a passion. She visited all fifty states, lived in fifteen. She lived in Germany, England, Greece, and China. She visited several provinces in Canada, several states in Mexico, a goodly number of Caribbean Islands, crewed on a sailing yacht to Bermuda, cruised the Mediterranean Sea, the Panama Canal, the Inland Passage to Alaska, and Hawaii. She has toured western Europe, sometimes back-packing, sometimes by car, often with family, Scandinavia to Italy, England and Spain to Croatia. She visited Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

She touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
