Mrs. Helen “Irene” Bennett, age 80, of Lenoir, passed away at Gateway Rehabilitation and Healthcare on Monday, June 26, 2017. Born November 26, 1936 in Caldwell County, NC was a daughter of the late Stewart and Ethel Shoemake. Irene loved bingo, making crafts and church services at Gateway Rehabilitation and Healthcare. She loved animals, especially Abe, her niece’s bird, who she talked with on the phone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Gordon Pitts and her second husband, Claude “Hoover” Bennett; four brothers, Murl Greene, Richard “Clell” Shoemake, Doyle Shoemake, and Stewart Shoemake, Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Rita Pitts Seagle (Husband Lynn) of Lenoir; two grandsons, Billy Toon (Wife Tonia) of Hudson, Aaron Seagle (Wife Elizabeth) of Lenoir; Ten Great Grandchildren; Numerous other relatives. A graveside service will be held at Walking by Faith Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 4:30 PM with Pastor Marvin Ford officiating. The family will receive friends at Evans Funeral Service prior to the service from 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Walking by Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 4778 Celia Creek Road, Lenoir, NC 28655 or Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care at 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645. The family would like to acknowledge the staff of Gateway Rehabilitation and Healthcare and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care for their excellent care and support.
