Lenoir- Mr. Jackie Edward “Ed” Hughes, 85, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at College Pines Nursing. He was born in Swain County on July 13, 1932 to the late Porter Hughes and Azalee Daniels Hughes Cable. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 62 years, Nellie Stewart Hughes. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Cable. Mr. Hughes was a wonderful and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was a devoted Christian and member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church. He is survived by his sons, David Hughes(Karon); Ron Hughes (Pam); Marty Hughes; Mitchell Hughes(Patty); sisters, Roma Nell Cable and Sharon Edwards; brothers, Blake Cable; Ted Cable; Larry Cable and Lonnie Cable; grandchildren, Bradley Hughes; Scott Hughes; Josh Hughes; Laura Arndt; Jennifer Love; Brett Hughes; Bailee Burleson; Sarah Dice; Zack Hughes; and Natalie Hughes; great-grandchildren, Anna Grace Hughes; Jackson Love; Preston Hughes; Ethan Love; Juliana Arndt; David Ray Hughes; Kinley Burleson; Caroline Arndt; Maverick Arndt; Ellie Love;and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mr. Hughes life will be held at Blue Ridge Baptist Church on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Larry Winkler and Pastor Mike Edwards officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Mr. Hughes grandsons and Derek Soots. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
