James DeVaughn Simmons

July 19, 1943 — November 30, 2025

James DeVaughn Simmons, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and community member, completed his journey on earth on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the age of 82. He peacefully joined his Savior, surrounded by the love of his family at Amorem-Burke.

Born in the heart of Caldwell County, North Carolina, on July 19, 1943, James was the beloved son of the late Hamp and Mae Simmons. A devoted husband, he spent 61 joyful years married to the love of his life, Linda Scott Simmons, who remains at their Granite Falls residence.

James's life was a testament to love, dedication, and passion. He retired as a respected technician from American & Efird, dedicating 40 years of service. Beyond his professional life, James was a man of nature, with a heart that thrived in the great outdoors. His adventures in hunting, fishing, and woodwork brought him endless joy and peace. Known affectionately as a "great piddler," his ingenious creations and innate curiosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

James held a steadfast faith as a member of the Baptist community, a faith that guided him throughout his life's journey. Beyond his parents, he reunites in heaven with his brothers, Bill, George, and Joe Simmons.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Linda, his devoted daughter Angie Shoun and her husband David, and his precious grandchildren: Amanda Abernathy and her husband Chad, and Noah Shoun and his wife Jennifer. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Kailey Royal and Gage Royal, his sister Shirley Broyhill and her husband Gary, his dear aunt Joy Greer, and countless other family members and friends who were blessed by his warmth and kindness.

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, a celebration of James’s life will take place at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service, with Pastor Darrell Hatchell officiating. Following the service, James will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Park, a place reflecting his lifetime of love and joy. Family and friends are invited to share their condolences and memories from 12:00 until 1:00 PM, prior to the service. Pallbearers will be David Shoun, Chad Abernathy, Gage Royal, Noah Shoun, Kirk Melton, Christopher Simmons and Mike Callaway.

James's departure leaves a void in our hearts, yet his legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty remains forever treasured.
