James "Jimbo" Edward Varner

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “Jimbo” Edward Varner Jr., age 53, who left us on Sunday, September 14, 2025. James passed away at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, just days before his 54th birthday. Born in Davidson County, NC, on September 17, 1971, James was the cherished son of James Edward Varner Sr. and Susan Luther Varner.

James was a beloved resident of Hickory, NC, sharing a beautiful life with his wife, Allanea "Ally" Reece Varner. Known for his warm heart and infectious smile, he was a devoted husband, father, step-father, son, brother, and "Pappy" to his five adored grandchildren. His charm and kindness extended beyond his family, making him an all-around good friend to many.

Professionally, James was a dedicated laborer at Century Furniture in Hickory, where his colleagues became lifelong friends. Beyond work, he found solace in the great outdoors, often taking to the open road on his motorcycle. Traveling with his family brought him immense joy and left a trail of cherished memories.

James' legacy continues through his loving family: his children, Dustin Varner and wife Lisa, Summer White and husband Brandon, Mason Reece and partner Jasmine Hoyle, and Haven Crisp; his sisters, Lisa Edwards and husband David; Sharon Mahan; daughter-in-law Hayley Varner; grandchildren, Ollie; Selene; Sophia; Alice; and Addie; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will hold his memory close.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 12:00 PM with Pastor Thomas Hutchins officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories, with a visitation starting at 11:00 AM until the time of service.

Arrangements are under the trusted care of Evans Funeral Service & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice in James’ honor.
