James Walter Leonhardt, a beloved community member of Hudson, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1st, 2025, at the age of 89. Born September 14th, 1936, in North Carolina, James, affectionately known as Walter to family and friends, lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys of nature.

Walter was the cherished husband of Brenda Leonhardt, who was not only his partner in life but also in all his passions, particularly their shared love for gardening. Together, they turned their residence into a veritable Eden, earning numerous Yard of the Month accolades for their beautifully kept garden, a testament to their green thumbs.

Walter's career was marked by an impressive 61-year tenure at Huffman Hosiery Mill, where he served as Plant Supervisor. He retired at the admirable age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment that inspired both his colleagues and community.

Outside of work, Walter found joy in the great outdoors, often engaging in activities like fishing and hiking. His love for flowers and the natural beauty of the world was infectious, winning the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Walter was a kind and gentle soul, known for his ever-present smile and his unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Elbert Leonhardt and Ella Samantha Leonhardt, and leaves behind a legacy enriched by love, respect, and the lessons of living a life full of grace and humility.

Walter's memory will be cherished and carried forward by his devoted wife of 43 years, Brenda Leonhardt, daughter, Audrey Leonhardt Reneau, son, James Bradley Leonhardt (Sherry), grandchildren, Stephen, Lauren, Ashley, great-grandchildren, Parker, John, Emmarie and his two loving dogs.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 7, 2025 at 3:00 pm at Poovey’s Grove Baptist Church Granite Falls. Private graveside at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Poovey’s Grove Baptist Church 4889 Poovey’s Grove Church Rd, Granite Falls, NC 28630.

Walter's gentle presence and unwavering kindness will be missed, but his spirit will forever bloom in the gardens he loved and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
