Jewel Ann Utsey

March 27, 1952 — June 14, 2026

Jewel Ann Utsey, of Harleyville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Bochette; her mother, Mahalie Bochette; and her sister, Ruth Felder.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 52 years, Michael "Mike" Utsey; her children, Joyelle "Joy" Walker (Russell), Thomas Utsey (Aline), and Suzanne Fitzwater (Rimley); her grandchildren, Amberly, Lexie (Teague), Miah Jewel, Zach, Mary Angelique, Wesley, Isaac, and Easton; and her great-grandchildren, Evie and Aizen.

She is also survived by her siblings, Sonny Bochette (Mary), Frank Bochette (Gayle), Robert Bochette (Diane), and Richard Bochette (Beth), all of whom lovingly called her Jewel Ann.

Jewel was married to the love of her life for 52 years. She dearly loved her dogs, Chi-Pom and Chi-Ween, who brought her great comfort and companionship and loved to cuddle with her.

She was a licensed HAM radio operator (KA4ZWN) and was the devoted wife of fellow operator Michael Utsey (WB4FOH).

Jewel loved fishing and singing. She especially cherished the times she was able to sing with her husband and children.

As a licensed cosmetologist, Jewel enjoyed helping others feel beautiful and confident. Jewel was well known throughout the Harleyville community and enjoyed operating the local grocery store, The Corner Red & White, affectionately known as the "Candy Store."

Above all, Jewel made sure her children knew Jesus Christ and lived her life as a devoted Christian. She taught Sunday School and served at a local Christian school, sharing her faith with those around her.

Jewel was a strong and resilient woman who overcame many challenges throughout her life. No matter what she faced, she always remained caring and compassionate toward others. She was the kind of person who would do everything she could to help others and bring them happiness.

One of the last things she did was ensure that her family was together. She wanted her loved ones to know that she was not afraid. She knew where she was going and was ready to go to Heaven.

Jewel was an amazing wife, mother, "Grandma Jewel," and Christian woman who will be deeply missed by many and never forgotten.

A memorial service celebrating Jewel's life will be held at Refuge Church, located at 203 Eddie Chasteen Drive, Walterboro, SC 29488, with Pastor Craig Crosby officiating.

The memorial service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
