Manifred (Muggy) Eugene Davenport

October 23, 1955 — November 13, 2025

Manifred Eugene Davenport (Muggy), age 70, passed away peacefully at home November 13, 2025, following an extended illness, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and love.

Born on October 23, 1955, in Harlem, New York, and raised in Lenoir, North Carolina. Muggy grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and energy of the neighborhood that shaped his character and spirit. Muggy worked at CCC&TI for 38 years until retirement.

Muggy was known for his steady presence, warm humor, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He carried the values of hard work and perseverance through every chapter of his life, always striving to uplift those around him. Whether offering a listening ear, thoughtful guidance, or quiet acts of kindness, he touched the lives of many.

Muggy was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Katie (Lipford) Davenport, whose partnership brought him deep joy, comfort, and companionship.

He was preceded in death by his father, Isaiah Davenport; his mother, Gennis Davenport; and his brother, Allen Davenport. Muggy is survived by his brother Steve Davenport (Janine), Uncle Eugene Davenport of Bever Creek, one Aunt Sidney Bowers (George) of Killeen, TX. Also, close to his heart was his nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends that he considered family.

Muggy will be remembered for his generous spirit, his quiet strength, and the love he gave freely. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.

Muggy, popularly known as “Sugar Sweet the DJ,” was much more than a son, brother, husband, and friend. He was the embodiment of music, laughter, energy, and life, even while facing the challenges of living with sickle cell anemia. His deep passion for music went beyond a career; it was the heartbeat that we all danced to for more than 20 years.

Muggy, your beats have stopped but your rhythm lives on in our hearts. Rest in power, rest in glory, and rest in peace.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday September 18, 2025, at 3:00pm. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir.

“I have fought the good fight; I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
