Mathis Wiley Greene

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mathis Wiley Greene, age 75, who left us peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Mathis was born on June 6, 1950, to the late Jay Rockford and Veora Greene, marking the start of a life that would touch many with love, kindness, and skill.

In addition to his beloved parents, Mathis is preceded in death by his infant son and siblings—brothers Ernest Greene of Lenoir and Archie Greene of Catawba; and sisters Evelyn Stansbury of Lenoir and Jewel Milam of Morganton.

Left to cherish Mathis’s memory are his devoted wife, Laura of Lenoir, who was privileged to share in his sharp wit and ingenuity. He is also survived by his son, Mathis Greene of Morganton; his stepson, Joseph Lail of Lenoir; and stepdaughter, Jennifer Guy (Russell) of Lenoir. His legacy continues through his grandsons, Dylan Guy, Mason Lail, and Colton Lail, all of Lenoir; and his granddaughter, Aurora Greene, of whom he was exceedingly proud.

Mathis is also survived by his brother, Travis Marley (Christine) of Wilkes, and sister, Jean Pluer (Hans) of Cornelius, along with numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who enjoyed countless moments of heartfelt laughter and adventure with him.

Known to many as a wonderful man with an infectious passion for life, Mathis was an excellent hunter, an avid fisherman, and a car enthusiast who found joy in tinkering and understanding the mechanics of his vehicles. His exceptional skills in carpentry left many in awe—there seemed to be nothing that Mathis couldn’t build with his hands and imagination. To his beloved Laura, he was the home’s very own “MacGyver,” ever resourceful and ready to solve any challenge with creativity and care.

Mathis Wiley Greene will be immeasurably missed but forever remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of love, skill, and joy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to share in his journey.

A service to celebrate Mathis’s life will be held on March 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Conley Road Pentecostal Holiness Church, 5208 Foreman St, Morganton, NC 28655 with Reverend Kenneth Milam officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
