Monique "Nana" Nelson, lovingly known to many as Niki, passed away on June 11, 2025, in Granite Falls, North Carolina, at the age of 50. Born Monique LeFever on August 5, 1974, in Lenoir, North Carolina
Monique was a beacon of love and acceptance whose greatest joy came from caring for others. Her life's passion was being a caretaker—not just in title but in spirit. She created a home that served as a sanctuary for all who entered. Whether it was her own children or those who simply needed a place to feel safe and heard, Monique welcomed them with open arms and an open heart. She never turned away a child in need; instead, she embraced them with empathy and understanding. Her home was often filled with laughter, footsteps, and the joyful noise of children playing—sounds that gave her strength and purpose.
She is survived by her devoted husband Randy Nelson and their beloved children: daughters Asheton Nelson; Julia Ann Nelson and her spouse Liz Jones; Daphne Jenkins and her husband Clarence (CJ) Jenkins; Ashley Mathis and her companion Corey Scott and son Nate Lambert. Monique’s legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Remy Louis-Lee Nelson; Lily Jenkins—her treasured “Lily Bug,” who held a uniquely special place in Monique’s heart; Riley Jenkins; Emma Jenkins; Corey Jenkins; Alder Lynn and Aiden Mathis. Each grandchild brought immense pride and happiness into her life.
Monique also leaves behind her brothers Jack Grey of West Virginia and Mike Lefevers of Conover, as well as her loving aunts Robin Newman, Karen Kincaid, and Deborah Black.
She was preceded in death by her mother Judith Lefever and father Eddie Ray Lefever of Granite Falls, along with her brothers Brian Matthew Grey and Mitch Lefever.
To those who knew her, Monique was more than a mother or grandmother—she was the epitome of unconditional love. She had an uncanny ability to sense when someone needed comfort or guidance. Family gatherings were never complete without Monique returning home with someone else’s child in tow—someone who needed warmth, laughter, or simply a listening ear. Her generosity knew no bounds.
Her legacy is not measured by accolades or possessions but by the countless lives she touched through kindness, compassion, and fierce maternal love. She will be remembered as the cool, hip refuge for wayward souls—a woman whose door was always open and whose heart had room for everyone.
A celebration of Monique’s life will be held at a Later date.
May Monique's memory continue to bring comfort to all who were blessed to know her—and may the sound of children's laughter forever echo in the hearts she leaves behind.
