Nancy Sage Prestwood, age 88, of Lenoir passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, surrounded by her children.
Mrs. Prestwood was born on January 22, 1938, in Stickleyville, Virginia, to the late Mr. William P. Sage, Sr. and Emmer Rasnic Sage.
On September 3, 1960, she married Ward Gerdine Prestwood, Sr., who preceded her in death.
Nancy was a 1955 graduate of Pennington High School and a 1958 graduate of Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She devoted her life to caring for others through her work as a nurse, serving in hospitals across several states before retiring from Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Of all her roles in nursing, her favorite place was the Operating Room, where she felt she could make the greatest difference.
She was a faithful member of Colliers United Methodist Church.
Nancy’s greatest joy in life was her family, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She had a love for music and especially enjoyed the piano and organ. Nancy had many hobbies that brought joy to both her and those around her. She was especially known for her baking and frequently "took orders" for her Cowboy Cookies, cheesecakes, and pound cakes. She enjoyed canning and helping with gardening. She was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and rarely, if ever, missed a game. Nancy was known for her honesty and quick wit, never hesitating to say exactly what she thought—something that made her both memorable and dearly loved.
Those left to cherish her memory include her three children: Lewis Scott “Buck” Prestwood and wife Sandra, Ward Gerdine “Hoss” Prestwood and wife Beth, and Paula Prestwood Kirkman and partner Johnny.
She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Abby Prestwood Hudgens and husband Brock; Katelyn “Katie” Victoria York and husband Josh; Cain Prestwood; and William Kirkman and fiancée Ally.
She delighted in her four great-grandchildren: Hank Hudgens, Poppy Hudgens, Finley York, and Charleston York.
She is further survived by her brother, William P. Sage, Jr. and wife Ann, a special niece, Janice “Jan” Bumgarner, and other numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Nancy will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her dedication as a nurse, her generous spirit in the kitchen, and the honest, strong personality that made her "Granny".
A graveside service will be held at Colliers United Methodist Cemetery on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 3:00 pm, with Reverend Lori Anne Bowen officiating.
Family and friends are invited to attend and gather in remembrance.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Caldwell County EMS, Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Frye Regional Medical Center, Shaire Center, and Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care for their exceptional care and support.
