Lenoir, NC- Mr. Sanford Martin Bowers, age 93, of Lenoir passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Born March 19, 1920 in Watauga County, Sanford was a son of the late Robert and Nora Glenn Bowers. He was an electrician by trade and Baptist by faith. Sanford enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially camping, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and telling stories. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II in France during the D-day invasion. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, wounded in the liberation of Paris. He never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Bowers and Eugene Bowers; three sisters, Ida Mae Carter , Louise Dudley and Bonnie Martin; three half sisters, Pearl Presnell, Ruth Cook, and Dare Edmisten; two half brothers, Don Farthing and Willie Farthing; a grandson, Bradley Bowers. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Esther Rash Bowers; his five children, Yvonne Price, Eugene Bowers, Freida Owens, Dean Bowers and Eva Whisnant; he is also survived by nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives. A celebration of Sanford’s life will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Rev. Russell Cook officiating. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.
