Sylvia "Jean" Church

Sylvia “Jean” Church, a Pastor’s wife and retired social worker, was born to Ida Dellinger and Moses Teague on December 17, 1936. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Jack Church on April 6, 2025. She completed her college education from Caldwell Community College and Fayetteville State University.

Jean was a church pianist for over 60 years and Sunday School Teacher. She was former President of the North Carolina Department of Social Services, former class President and editor of her college newspaper. Jean was elected in to the Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Sandra Church Goodman and son, Steven Church of Lenoir; brother-in-law, Ralph Edward Church and his daughter, Michelle Church Huffman. She is also survived by many Coffey and Dellinger cousins; and her nephew, Jeffrey Dale Bryant.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Whitnel on Friday, May 23, 2025 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Stuart White and Reverend James Cain officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Worship Point Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 prior to the service at the church.
