Tom “TS” Spurgeon Childers Jr, age 79, passed away peacefully at the home on May 12,2026.He was born to the late Tom and Ruby Link Childers in Caldwell County. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters Maxine Byerly, Merrium Sue Bush, brother Woodrow “Woody” Childers and niece Ashley Hurte. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Childers. Those left to cherish his memory are brother in laws Jimmy (Lisa) Hurte and Tommy Byerly; sister in law Rose Etta Younce; nephews Todd (Marie) Younce, Brian (Kristie) Younce, Kyle (Teresa) Byerly, Justin Hurte; great nieces Sydney Younce, Ella Younce, Katie Byerly; great nephew Seth (Amelia) Byerly and a great-great niece and nephew.
TS graduated from Hudson High School in 1965 where he found his love of sports and the love of his life. Right out of high school he continued his love of football by playing with the semi-pro league The Caldwell County Bulldogs for several years and coaching little league. After marrying his high school sweetheart he tried many different occupations before starting his career with the City of Lenoir Wastewater Treatment Department where he rose through the ranks to become a Supervisor before retiring after 30 years of service. After retirement he continued his career as a consultant in the field of “Hockeyology”. TS was the smartest person in the room, all you had to do was ask him. He was always the life of the party, quick with a funny saying or comment and a comedian to all. He was always right and never told a lie, only stretching the truth a little. He lived his life to the fullest, sometimes coming back with an injury or two but always got back up the next day ready for another adventure. He was larger than life to friends and family and will be missed dearly.
Receiving for family and friends will be on Saturday May 23, 2026 from 11am - 1pm at Evans Funeral Service with service at 1pm with Pastor Steve Walsh presiding. Interment will be directly after at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
