Nellie Smith Mullinax, 88, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2021. Nellie was born at home on May 5, 1933 to the late Albert Corbin Smith and Sarah Ida Bolick Smith, of the Union Grove community in Caldwell County, NC.Nellie lived all but 12 years within 1 mile of her place of birth. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Dewey Wayne Mullinax, and siblings Stanley (Yvonne) Smith, Clyde Smith, Gladys (Lonnie) Greene, Mary (Vance) Turner, James C. (Jim) Smith, and three nephews. Nellie is survived by her daughters Donna Mullinax Swanson and husband Todd Swanson of Granite Falls, NC; Debra Mullinax Sanders and husband Greg Sanders of Wake Forest, NC; grandchildren John Paul Cochran, Grace Cochran, Hannah Robinson (Steve), Andrew Swanson, Sarah Swanson, and great grandson Judah Robinson; sister-in-law Jeane Smith, and many nieces and nephews. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1951 and was employed with Blue Bell Industries, the US Postal Service, and retired from Bernhardt Furniture after 25 years of employment. Nellie was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church, Lenoir, NC for over 50 years where she served as church librarian, church historian, and in various other areas of service. Nellie was a member of the Caldwell Genealogical Society. She enjoyed researching and documenting her extensive family tree. Nellie was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling with Wayne, who fondly called her by her childhood nickname – Tootle. Funeral services for Nellie will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday June 3rd at Union Grove Baptist Church, Lenoir, NC. The family will receive visitors from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial and graveside services will occur in the church cemetery following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Union Grove Baptist Church Library Fund, C/O Union Grove Baptist Church, 1808 Union Grove Rd, Lenoir, NC 28645.
